Important Disclaimer

Timber Logic is a personal project created and maintained by Shane, a timber haulier and amateur woodworker from Nottinghamshire. I am not a qualified timber scientist, structural engineer, or trade professional. I am a hobbyist information researcher and curator.

All content on this site—including species data, calculators, guides, and technical references—is compiled from publicly available sources, personal experience, and my own research. It is provided for general information and educational purposes only.

While I take great care to ensure accuracy, I cannot guarantee that every figure, calculation, or recommendation is correct, complete, or suitable for your specific circumstances. You should always verify critical data independently and consult qualified professionals before making structural, safety-critical, or commercial decisions based on anything you find here.

In short: I built this toolkit because I wanted it to exist. I share it freely because I think it is useful. But I am one bloke with a lorry and a workshop—not a laboratory. Use your judgement.

1. Agreement to Terms

By accessing or using Timber Logic (https://hawksburytimber.co.uk), you agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions. If you do not agree with any part of these terms, please do not use the site.

2. Nature of Content

Timber Logic provides information about timber species, woodworking techniques, material science, and related calculators. This content is:

  • Educational and informational only — not professional engineering, architectural, or trade advice.
  • Compiled from public sources — including academic papers, industry data sheets, manufacturer specifications, and personal observation.
  • Subject to variation — timber is a natural material. Properties vary between species, growing regions, individual boards, moisture content, and processing methods.
  • Periodically updated — but may not reflect the most current research or standards at any given time.

3. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Timber Logic and its creator accept no liability for any loss, damage, injury, or expense arising from the use of information, data, calculations, or recommendations provided on this site.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, losses arising from structural failure, material defects, incorrect calculations, misidentification of species, or reliance on outdated data.
  • The calculators and tools on this site are estimation aids, not certified engineering instruments. Results should always be verified against authoritative sources and professional judgement.

4. No Professional Advice

Nothing on this site constitutes professional advice of any kind, including but not limited to:

  • Structural or civil engineering advice
  • Architectural or building regulations guidance
  • Health and safety recommendations
  • Commercial timber grading or certification
  • Legal or financial advice

Always consult a qualified professional for decisions involving structural integrity, building compliance, or safety.

5. Accuracy of Data

I do my best to present accurate, well-sourced data. However:

  • Timber properties are inherently variable. Values for density, hardness, shrinkage, and movement are indicative ranges, not absolutes.
  • Data may originate from different testing standards (e.g. ISO, BS EN, ASTM) which can produce different values for the same property.
  • Errors may exist despite my best efforts. If you spot one, please let me know and I will correct it.

6. Calculator & Tool Disclaimer

The interactive calculators (moisture content, timber movement, structural span, etc.) are designed as educational estimation tools. They:

  • Use simplified models of complex physical behaviour.
  • Assume idealised conditions that may not match real-world scenarios.
  • Should never be used as the sole basis for structural, load-bearing, or safety-critical decisions.
  • Are not a substitute for calculations performed by a chartered structural engineer.

7. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, the original text, design, code, and educational content on Timber Logic is © 2026 Shane / Timber Logic. You may:

  • Share and reference content with proper attribution and a link back to the original page.
  • Use data for personal projects — that is what it is there for.

You may not:

  • Reproduce substantial portions of this site for commercial purposes without permission.
  • Present this content as your own work.
  • Scrape or bulk-download data for redistribution or resale.

Timber species data referenced from published scientific sources remains the intellectual property of the original authors and institutions. I cite sources where possible.

8. Third-Party Links

This site may contain links to external websites, suppliers, resources, and references. I do not control or endorse the content of third-party sites, and I am not responsible for their accuracy, availability, or privacy practices. Following external links is at your own risk.

9. Affiliate Links & Commissions

This site may contain affiliate links to third-party products, tools, and suppliers. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

  • Affiliate links are clearly identified where required by law or platform rules.
  • I only link to products and services I genuinely believe are useful or relevant to woodworkers.
  • Affiliate relationships do not influence the editorial content, species data, calculator results, or guide recommendations on this site.
  • Affiliate partners may set cookies on your device to track referrals. See the Privacy Policy for details.

10. Memberships & Paid Tiers

Timber Logic may offer paid membership tiers that provide access to additional tools, content, or features. If memberships are introduced:

  • Pricing, features, and billing terms will be clearly stated before you subscribe.
  • Payments will be processed by a third-party payment provider (e.g. Stripe or PayPal). I do not store your card details.
  • You may cancel your subscription at any time. Access to paid features will continue until the end of your current billing period.
  • Refund policies will be stated at the point of purchase.
  • Free-tier content and tools will remain available. Memberships are intended to fund development, not to paywall existing features.

11. User Accounts & Data

If you create an account or use features that store data (such as the Project Hub or saved preferences):

  • You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.
  • Data you save (cut lists, project notes, preferences) is stored to enhance your experience.
  • I will not sell, share, or exploit your personal data. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
  • I reserve the right to delete accounts that are inactive for an extended period or that violate these terms.

12. Cookies & Analytics

This site may use cookies and basic analytics to understand how people use the tools and content. This helps me improve the site. No personal data is sold or shared with advertisers. For specifics, see the Privacy Policy.

13. Availability & Changes

Timber Logic is a personal project. I maintain it in my spare time alongside a full-time job and a family. As such:

  • I cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability.
  • Features, content, and tools may be added, changed, or removed at any time.
  • I reserve the right to update these terms at any time. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

14. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from the use of this site will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

15. Contact
