Timber Marketplace

Spare timber, to people who’ll use it

A noticeboard for slabs, offcuts, reclaimed boards and odd lots. Yards, makers and anyone with a stack in the garage can put an advert up. Buyers get in touch through the site, and you sort the rest out between you.

Free to post while the Marketplace gets going.

How it works

Four steps, and I stay out of the deal

  1. Post your advert. Photos of the actual timber, the species, real sizes, how dry it is and a price.
  2. I give it a quick check. Every advert is checked before it goes live, so the board stays timber, not tat.
  3. Buyers message you. Messages come to your email. Your address isn’t shown on the advert.
  4. You sort the sale between you. Price, payment and collection are up to you and the buyer. Hawksbury takes no money for the timber.

What people put up

Anything made of wood that a maker or DIYer could use. If it would end up in a skip or a woodburner, someone here probably wants it more.

Two waney edge slabs

Slabs and boards

Waney edge slabs, kiln dried boards, beams and planks, from one board to a whole stack.

A pile of offcuts and short ends

Offcuts and short ends

The good bits too short for the yard to sell: turning blanks, carving blocks, box-making stock.

A reclaimed beam with old nail holes, and floorboards

Reclaimed timber

Old beams, floorboards and joists with a past, ready for a second life.

Prices

Free for now. Small fees later.

Adverts are free while the Marketplace gets going. Further down the line, adverts will cost a small fee to keep the board running and spam-free. This is the plan, so nobody’s surprised:

Anyone

£3 an advert

Live for 60 days, with up to 6 photos.

Regular sellers

5 adverts for £10

Use them whenever you like.

Listed on Hawksbury

Adverts included

Makers in the directory get one advert free at any time. Yards on a paid listing get adverts included.

My promise

You’ll always see the price before you post, and adverts already running won’t be charged. Prices may change before I start charging. If they do, this page changes first.

The guidelines

Keeping the board useful

The Timber Marketplace is a noticeboard. Anything you agree after a buyer gets in touch is between you and the other person: the price, the payment, collection, delivery and any returns. Hawksbury doesn’t take payments, doesn’t hold money, doesn’t check the timber and isn’t part of the sale.

What you can advertise

  • Boards, slabs, beams and planks
  • Offcuts and short ends
  • Reclaimed timber, such as beams, floorboards and joists
  • Logs for milling
  • Turning and carving blanks
  • Sheet material offcuts
  • Veneers

The Marketplace is for one-off lots: offcuts, seconds, the end of a batch, clearance or a short run. If you’re a yard with timber you always carry, put it on the Regular stock list on your listing instead (manage your listing). You can still advertise a particular lot of a regular line, like the end of a batch.

What you can’t advertise

  • Firewood or logs for burning. In England, small amounts of wood sold for burning have to be certified “Ready to Burn”, so I leave it out.
  • Protected timber without its paperwork. A few species, such as Brazilian rosewood, need a certificate before they can be sold in the UK.
  • Timber you don’t own or can’t legally sell.
  • Anything that isn’t timber, like tools, machines or finished furniture.
  • Adverts from national chains. The Marketplace is for independents, makers and the public.

Be honest in your advert

  • Say what the species is. If you’re not sure, say so, for example “I think it’s ash”.
  • Give the real sizes and say whether it’s kiln dried, air dried or green.
  • Use your own photos of the actual timber.
  • Show a price, or “Offers”.
  • If you’re selling as a business, say so. The law says traders mustn’t pass themselves off as private sellers.

When it’s sold

Mark it sold using the link in your email, so people stop messaging you. Adverts end on their own after 60 days, and I’ll email you a week before in case you want to renew.

Buying safely

Go and see the timber before you pay. Pay when you collect where you can. Never send a deposit to someone you haven’t met, and don’t pay by bank transfer to a stranger for something you haven’t seen. If something feels off, press “Report this advert”.

I can remove adverts

Every advert gets an automatic check before it goes live, and anyone can report one. I’ll take down any advert that breaks these guidelines, looks like a scam, or gets reported and checks out. If I remove one by mistake, I’ll put it back.

The terms

By posting an advert you agree to these terms.

  1. What Hawksbury does. I provide a place to post adverts and a contact form so buyers can reach sellers. I am not the seller, the buyer, or an agent for either.
  2. The sale is between you. The price, payment, condition, collection, delivery, returns and any disputes are between the buyer and the seller. I take no payment for the timber and handle no money for the sale.
  3. I don’t check the timber. I don’t inspect, value or guarantee anything advertised, and I can’t promise an advert is accurate. Sellers are responsible for what they post.
  4. What I’m responsible for. I’m only responsible for the service I provide: your advert being shown for the time it runs. If I fail at that, I’ll put it right. Nothing in these terms limits anything the law doesn’t allow me to limit.
  5. Your advert. You confirm you own the timber, you’re allowed to sell it, and your advert is honest. You let me show your advert and photos on Hawksbury and in my emails and social posts about the Marketplace.
  6. Your contact details. Buyers’ messages are emailed to you. I don’t show your email address on the advert, and I don’t keep copies of buyers’ messages. Ended adverts and their photos are deleted 90 days after they end. My privacy policy explains the rest.
  7. Removing adverts. I can remove an advert that breaks the guidelines, and I can stop someone posting if they keep doing it.
  8. Reporting. Anyone can report an advert. I look at reports and act on them. To complain about how I’ve handled one, email hello@hawksburytimber.co.uk.
  9. Fees. Adverts are free for now. If that changes, the price will be shown before you post, and adverts already running won’t be charged.
  10. Changes. I may update these terms. The version that applies is the one shown when you posted. These terms were last updated on 19 October 2026.
