Moisture Content (MC)

Water in wood, expressed as a percentage of oven-dry mass. Changes in MC drive movement.

Moisture content (MC) is the percentage of water in wood compared to its oven-dry weight.

MC changes as wood gains or loses moisture to match its environment. As MC changes, wood changes size across the grain.

In practice: measure MC, let timber acclimate to your shop, then final-size. Indoor targets are usually lower than outdoor targets.
