Tearout

A rough, torn surface created during planing, routing, or machining when fibres are lifted and broken out instead of being cleanly cut.

In practice

More common when cutting against the grain or in interlocked/figured grain. Reduced by sharper tools, lighter cuts, and higher cutting angles.
