Overview
European oak is a workhorse hardwood used for furniture, flooring, and interior joinery.
Best for: table frames and tops, doors, cabinetry, architectural joinery.
Watch-outs: open grain texture, tannin reacts with iron (black staining), and wide panels need seasonal allowance.
Design note: quarter-sawn stock tends to behave better in wide parts. Use slots/buttons and avoid locking the width.
Workability
Cuts and planes cleanly with sharp tools.
Avoid iron contact (tannin staining). Test water-based finishes on offcuts.
Drying
Moderate drying speed.
Quarter-sawn boards are notably steadier for wide panels.
Toxicity
Dust can irritate. Wear extraction and a mask when sanding.
